Puerto Rico Earthquakes: Relief & RebuildingAs 2019 came to a close, the earth started shaking and hasn't stopped shaking in Puerto Rico. My family members are safe, though without power and sleeping outside for fear of their homes collapsing during ongoing aftershocks. Please spread awareness and reach out to your politicians in order to keep Puerto Rico front of mind. Please also support organizations offering relief. Below I share three efforts that my family supports. If you’re able, please give and spread the word. Thank you in advance for your continued prayers and attention. Three Ways to HelpCONPRMETIDOS We donated to the Stay Strong Campaign from ConPRmetidos, a nonprofit in Puerto Rico whose mission is to create a stable, productive, and self-sufficient Puerto Rico. They were well positioned to provide $15,000 worth of relief in the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes. Now they have shifted to long term efforts that include partnering with and funding organizations on the ground. Specifically they are providing grants to help fund: counseling and mental health services, recruitment of volunteer structural engineers, other projects and developmental opportunities in the affected areas. TALLER SALUD We also sent funds to Taller Salud, for whom I’ve helped raise money in the past. While Taller Salud is located in the north (away from the main impact of the quakes), in response to the earthquakes it has established an Emergency Fund for Women’s Health in Disaster Zones. It has also committed to serving as a fiscal agent for other on-the-ground organizations serving those in need. BORICUA EN LA LUNA
My essay “Literatura, Música, y (Huracán) María: A Puerto Rican Poet’s Reflections After the Storm” appears in this new anthology. All proceeds will benefit ongoing recovery (hurricane and earthquake) efforts in Puerto Rico.
