Spend Your Summer With Puerto Rico:
Podcast Recommendations (Part 3/3)

Welcome back! Today I share the third post in the Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico series, featuring my newest addiction: podcasts!

In case you missed them, check out:

Part 1: Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico: Book Recommendations

Part 2: Spend You Summer with Picture Book Recommendations

I began listening to podcasts this year and now I'm kind of obsessed. I usually listen to episodes while pushing the kiddo around in a stroller to the park or swim class.

I mostly listen to writing related podcasts — more on those some other time — but for today I'm sharing some podcast episodes discussing Puerto Rico.

I've included both recent episodes discussing the current state of affairs on the island and a few from last fall discussing the immediate aftermath of Hurricane María. Under each link are excerpts from the show notes (in italics).

Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico:
Picture Book Recommendations (Part 2/3)

This is the second of the three part series: Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico.

In case you missed it, check out Part 1: Book Recommendations.

Today's edition of Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico turns its attention towards my youngest audience and to the adults who love them.

As I've mentioned before, I love picture books and I've collected them for years--long before I became a mother myself.

My ever growing picture book collection focuses on stories from underrepresented communities in general, but one of the most robust sections is, unsurprisingly, the one containing picture books about Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans.

The list below features some of my son's and my favorites. They should be on your list for any of the comelibritos in your life--especially the Puerto Rican ones.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMI!

Can't spend YOUR summer in Puerto Rico?

Then let me bring a little Puerto Rico into your summer in the best way I know how--through books!

This month's blog series, Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico, is inspired in part by my summers in Puerto Rico. I talk a little about those summer visits here.

July 2018 Newsletter: Spend Your Summer with Puerto Rico!

Hola Mi Gente,

Summer is in full swing, and I’ve been thinking a lot about my childhood summers in Puerto Rico, living at our grandparents’ house and running around with my brother and crazy cousins.

Those were the days!

Wrapped in blankets of humidity, we splashed under the cold water shooting out of my abuela’s manguera.

We chased legartijos and ate quenepas and sorullitos like they were going out of style because in a way they were; once we returned to NYC we wouldn't have them at our ready disposal.

On the weekends our Titis & Tíos took us on excursions around the island.

We also got bored. . . a lot. . . and learned the valuable lesson of figuring it out!

My summers in Puerto Rico were probably one of the greatest gifts our parents gave us. Not only did we grow up with two languages, we also built deep relationships with our elders and extended family members.

I’m heading down to Puerto Rico later this summer—for the first time since Hurricane María—and I can’t capture in either language how eager I am to hold my parents and grandparents in my arms.

Since I know many of you can’t spend your summer in Puerto Rico, I thought I’d bring a little bit of Puerto Rico into your summer, through—what else—books!

Follow the blog this month for two lists of great Puerto Rican summer reads—one for adults and one for the comelibritos (little bookworms) in your life. I'll also share a list of podcast episodes dedicated to Puerto Rico. Check out a preview at the end of this e-mail.
